How to Configure Outlook Express to Check Your Email

Step 1: Launch Outlook Express

Start Outlook Express. Click "Tools" on the menu bar and then choose "Accounts...".

Step 2: Start the Wizard

In the window that opens, click on the "Mail" tab to view existing email accounts (if any).
You may remove any old accounts if you are sure you are no longer using them.
Then click the "Add" button and choose "Mail..." to start the setup Wizard.

Step 3: Your Display Name

In the Wizard, fill in the display name for your new account.
(This determines the real name used in the "From" column for recipients of your email.)

Step 4: Your Email Address

Next, fill in the email address that you are setting up.

Step 5: Incoming and Outgoing Mail Servers

Mountain Media's incoming mail server is a POP3 server; it's hostname is pop.mountainmedia.com. The outgoing (SMTP) mail server's address is smtp.mountainmedia.com. Before clicking "next", double-check the spelling of both servers!

If you would prefer to use Mountain Media's IMAP email service, you can simply change the incoming mail server to a IMAP server and adjust the incoming mail server address to imap.mountainmedia.com.


Step 6: Your Login Settings

Next, type in your email address and the password that was provided to you. These settings are used to log into our server; note that the account name is your full email address. The password is case-sensitive. Check "Remember Password" to save typing it later.
Type your password carefully. Double-check that your email address is spelled correctly!

Step 7: Finish Up

Hit the "Finish" button. This will take you back to your list of email accounts. In that window, click the "Close" button to return to the main Outlook Express window. There, hit the "Send/Recv" button to test your new account setup.

Troubleshooting

Errors when sending or receiving mail can be caused by:

  • No Internet Connection
    Refresh this page. If it doesn't reload, try visiting a site such as CNN.com. If both pages can't be found, your ISP is probably experiencing network problems. You should contact your ISP if the problem persists.
  • Server Problems
    If the CNN site loads but you cannot reload this page, then Mountain Media may be experiencing a temporary server or network problem. Our outages are rare and generally brief, but you should contact us if the problem persists.
  • Improper Configuration
    Barring network and server problems, the primary reason for a send/receive error is improper configuration of Outlook Express. Repeat Steps 1 and 2 (above), except - rather than adding an account - select your new account from the "Mail" list and hit "Properties". In the window that opens, browse through the various tabs and verify your settings. Old accounts that are configured but are no longer active (for instance, you changed ISPs and/or hosting companies) will cause errors and should be deleted.
  • Bugs in Outlook Express
    Occassionally, an account that has been working fine will suddenly stop working. Deleting the account, setting it up again, and restarting Outlook Express often clears up the problem.
